Well it didn't come as a surprise to anyone but Google has teamed up with HTC to produce the Nexus One. Google
held a press conference to unveil the new phone running Android 2.1. Currently the phone comes in 2 flavors:
Unlocked for $529 and with a NEW 2 year contract on T-mobile for $180.

So what does the Nexus One bring to the table? And what is T-mobile doing to screw over its existing customers?
(you didn't really think T-mobile was going to reward you for being a loyal customer did you?)
Google unveils their "Superphone"
So after all of the rumors and hype it's finally here. The Nexus One. The phone to end all phones. Ok, so it's
just another HTC phone with Android. Way to kill the fun.

You want to know what's so special about another Android phone that Google has to go out of their way to
promote it? Well I have a couple of theories:

1. This is my main theory. Since Google didn't really produce the hardware on this phone I can't really suspect
them as coming after Apple, Nokia, Samsung or anyone else in the hardware market. I suspect it's more of
them putting a small number of phones out that can move throughout the networks that are currently in place.
After they have a good foothold on the phone OS market they can cripple the current wireless carriers with
phone calls over Wifi and any wireless spectrum they come across during auctions. This seems likely the
best plan as they don't have to worry about hardware manufacturing and can focus on Android and the
marketplace. This also gives them a greater audience to tap into
(all of us who hate our wireless carriers as
opposed to all of us who just hate the phones we have)
.

2. My other theory is the complete opposite. Google is going to jump into the phone market with both feet. The
Nexus One is just the first step. It worked with HTC
(a company that has made a phone or two in its time) and
Google has learned a lot. Next they might partner with Samsung and see what be can learned from them.
They pick and choose which parts of the phones work with Google's goals. The leftovers go to Motorola for
use in the next RAZR
(I kid, I loved my razr the first week I had it before I threw it at a wall). Then Google
comes out with its true "superphone".

Either way the Nexus One is here. So let's see what we've got.

Using the 1GHz Snapdragon processor was a good move and the 3.7inch AMOLED screen is nice. It has a 5
megapixel camera with LED flash like its Droid counterpart. All well and good but I know what you're thinking.
I see a trackball, does it change colors? My response: What the hell is wrong with you? Do you need it to
match your purse?
I mean, why yes it does!!! The color changes with different notification (that has to be what
makes it a superphone)
. It has your stand GPS, accelerometer, and 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has what
should be standard by now Stereo Bluetooth. And my favorite addition wireless N wifi
(Suck it B and G!).
UPDATE: Wireless N has been removed from the supported wifi section. No word on if it will return.
The
battery is 1400mAH with life times shown in the image above.

And of course it's running Android 2.1
(and can run Flash 10.1 Hellz Ya!!!11!)

So now we get to figure out what the hell has T-mobile done to spoil this part.
As you can see you can pick up the phone unlocked for $529. If you want to use it on AT&T you can but be
warned 3G won't work. You will only have EDGE which kind of puts a downer on that. Your other choice right
now is to get it through T-Mobile. Now if you are switching from another carrier or this is your first phone
(Congrats!), then the phone will cost you $179 with a new 2 year contract. Even though there is only 1 plan you
can buy right now ($80 a month for 500 minutes, unlimted texts and data), I'm reading reports online that you
can change your plan after you've signed up for the phone.

Now if you're an existing T-mobile customer and you're adding a data plan the phone is going to cost you
$279. Thats right, you want to add a new plan the phone is going to cost you more. For all of you T-mobile
customers laughing at those poor people because you're cool and are just going to upgrade because you
only need 1 line that will be $379. Ya now that extra bag of Dorito's at lunch doesn't seem like a good idea
does it
(who am I kidding, Dorito's are always a good idea).

Way to go T-mobile! There's no way people are gonna just wait until Verizon gets the Nexus One and then
jumpship. They will stay loyal to you for all you've done for them. I mean come on, what's a couple hundred
dollars between friends?

Google has stated that all Android phones will get all of the updates that they can handle. So the Nexus One
won't be the only phone with version 2.1. Do I think you should buy one? That depends on a lot of things. I do
believe this is a great phone. On T-mobile? We'll have to see but I'm not going to hold my breath. I would
probably wait until it hits Verizon later this year.

Just remember, as soon as you buy a phone theres another one about to come to market that's going to put
yours to shame. So pick the phone and network that best works for you.
What's going on in the world today?
